In this life we get nothing save by effort." - Theodore Roosevelt, 26th president of the United StatesTheodore Roosevelt didn't just carry a big stick; he waved it vociferously. And as a man of his word, he didn't back down. It's no wonder that—in light of his laundry list of successes—Teddy Roosevelt is remembered as one of our nation's greatest presidents. In honor of the sesquicentennial of his birth (today, Oct. 27, 2008), The History Channel Magazine editors put together a short list of accomplishments that commemorate the legacy of TR:
As lieutenant colonel of the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War, he led the charge at the battle of San Juan.
He provided federal protection for almost 230 million acres and doubled the size of the national park system.
By building up the U.S. Navy, he established America as a major world power.
He negotiated U.S. control of the Panama Canal and its construction in 1904.
